What is your occupation?
I am a professor and currently I work in University Administration. My professorship is in Leadership and Policy Studies and I specialize in the area of multicultural education, literacy, bi-literacy, second language acquisition, and leadership.

2. What do you like most about it?
I truly enjoy the freedom to co-discover knowledge with my students that we share with each other. The ability to influence policy in education in many different ways.

3. Who are some of your favorite writers?
I like Latina authors, especially in the genre or Chica Lit. Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez is one of my all time favorites, as well as Linda Powell-Nieves, Jamie Martinez, and Mary Castillo.
Check out my good reads at: http://www. goodreads. com/review/list/1174308 to see some of my all time favorites.
4. What genre(s) do you like and why?
I love all genres…fiction and non-fiction alike. In fiction, I especially like chick lit, romance novels. In non-fiction, I enjoy memoirs, self-help books, spirituality, and educational books.

5. How did you learn of myspace and what made you decide to join it?
I’ve learned of myspace from the media. My son helped me set up my first myspace page (as a Harry Potter fan) and then I discovered my writing friends and companions on myspace and started my writer’s page.

6. What makes you decide to pick up a book and buy it?
Usually a recommendation or the author. There are certain authors that I read religiously and when they have a new book out, I will get it and read it. My chica lit authors are in this column.
Secondly, recommendations from friends, colleagues, public figures (love Oprah’s picks) and book club recommendations.
I also read reviews and will pick up a book that appears to be interesting.

8. Who or what inspires you the most?
Powerful writers with a strong message—whether in fiction or non-fiction. I like books that tell a story, teach a lesson, make a point, or inspire others to do more, do better, be better human beings, or better world citizens.

9. What has been the best book you ever read?
Wow…so many books, how can I pick just one? It would have to be The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It is the first book that truly inspired me to believe in the magic of my dreams, the power of the mind, and the case for serendipity.

10. What's the most important thing for a writer to keep with them?
A spirit of fun and enthusiasm. You cannot take yourself or your craft too seriously. You have to let your muse out to play on a regular basis.

11. Zulmara Cline asked me some neat questions, and this week I will be posting a full length interview with her, so stay posted!

ZC: How do you pay your muse?
JB: Pay my muse? I must admit I've never heard of that before. If I could pay my muse and honestly afford to, they would get taken to a very nice restaraunt on top of whatever else their soul desired! LOL

ZC: How do you nurture your inner creative spirit?
JB: I keep my mind open, I am continiously dreaming up ideas! I also don't try to get burn out, but keep myself determined. There is a very fine line between the two but somehow I do manage it for the most part!

ZC: Who has inspired you most as a writer?
JB: I've had a lot of inspirations, both people and events. My fave suspense writers have inspired me the most to go to the genre I am now in. I used to write mysteries, and my man asked me today why I strayed from it. The answer came to me, and I never really realized it until that moment! Mysteries always seem to be about someone getting murdered, find the killer, or someone stealing something valuable, have to retrieve it, or both. In most suspense you manage to find that extra twist, that something that most mysteries seem to miss, a certain feeling you can't get from reading or writing a mystery. Mystery just bored me.

ZC: What do you want to be in your next life?
JB: I like the idea of that muse thing. I'd love to be that ghostly muse, that generates great ideas in the most depressed writer who has had enough. Give them the confidence to go on.

The Chris Farley Show: A Biography in 3 acts

http://jenniferbrownauthor.weebly.com/4/post/2008/06/the-chris-farley-show-a-biography-in-3-acts.html

http://jenniferbrownauthor.weebly.com/4/post/2008/06/the-chris-farley-show-a-biography-in-3-acts.html#comments

Uncategorized

After reading this book I was so blown away I just had to post something on it. I grew up, at least in my teenage years on watching SNL. Wayne's World is what kicked it all off for me and from then on I was hooked.

If you are an SNL fan, especially a fan of Chris Farley you really should get a hold of this book. Now I will admit, I am a total Spade fan but Chris was funny as hell too and I will admit I don't honestly know how the movies they paired up in would have turned out if Farley had not been in them.

In 95 I went to see Tommy Boy and it was a reunion outing between me and a friend from middle school. Naturally I got her hooked as well on the two of them.

As you read through the book, it's like reading an episode of E Hollywood True Story. And you get to understand so much more where Farley, his family and friends are concerned. As I read it I was surprised by a few things and not so surprised by others.

For instance, the fact that Spade never attended the funeral, and the reasoning that people just could not grasp. People just couldn't understand the sacrifices he made for Chris, and the fact he did not want to remember him lying in a box. Believe me people, David was a lot better friend to him than you could realize. In fact he was more of a friend than I could have even have fathomed to guess.

I honestly never felt any hostitlity about him not going. I already knew some about David and his past and understood. I was more worried about how he was taking it.

That day has become a permanent memory in my mind as I'm sure it has with all his fans. It's like 9/11 when people ask you where you were and what you were doing when you learned of it. At that point, I was really sick in bed. My mom was babysitting and I heard the name Chris Farley mentioned on tv so I jumped up to see what it was about.

I must say my mouth hit the floor. The first four words out of my mouth were "Oh my God David". The next several days I was worried about how he would be. I mean...I had read about his problems in a magazine while we were getting an oil change or something I think a few months before. This was brought up in the book and made me recall. So, I was shocked but not so shocked you know?

After reading this book I started thinking horribly of myself thinking I should not have been thinking of David I should have been more concerned for the family...which I was. I though how horrible and disastrous it had to be losing him right before christmas.

A year before Tommy Boy came out, I had just broken up with my boyfriend I'd had almost all through high school. I had wrongly made him my world and neglected something I had started in grade school. My writing. After watching SNL, and reading up on the cast, especially the cute blonde guy who seemed to be a smart ass...I had an epiphany. I guess you could call it that. I learned he was a writer as well, went through hard times as well losing his stepdad, a best friend. I was a Spade fan from then on. When I returned to writing that year, I based a character off him in my book which is sadly no longer available, due to issues with the publisher.

But in the words of Farley, anyhoo....reading this book made me realize just how complex he was but deep down just a guy trying really hard to be accepted in the world, doing whatever that meant.
